The Sinus Infection Report - New Column! - The Portland Mercury

Image
Mercury illustration. Doc by 4x6 / Getty Images ’Tis the season... sinus infection season! While public health authorities insist I’m “not a licensed medical professional,” I urge you to take heed of these sinus infection facts — YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT! • How do sinus infections spread? Via this website! UH OH! • Sinus infections are caused when mold rots your nasal passages, spreading down your throat and eventually to the deepest curds of your brain! Perhaps you should have practiced better intracranial hygiene. • Got “leaky eyes”? That’s mold trying to wriggle its way out of your skull! • Or maybe it’s pinkeye! • Every TriMet bus is a disease coffin, and its passengers are pathogen puppets. Also there’s pee on that seat, watch out! • Sinus infections have only one cure: ANTIBIOTICS! But because bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics, doctors are getting all stingy with them in an attempt to avoid a “global pandemic” that will supposedly kill “untold millio

Cats and schizophrenia: Study links cat parasite to schizophrenia - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Image
More than 40 million people in the United States may be infected with the single-celled cat-borne parasite Toxoplasma gondii, according to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . The infection typically occurs by eating or handling undercooked, contaminated meat or shellfish; drinking contaminated water or accidentally swallowing the parasite through contact with cat feces. » RELATED: A root cause of schizophrenia may have finally been found Most infected individuals don’t have symptoms, but pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems are at heightened risk of a flu-like illness or serious eye and brain damage. Prenatal infection may also cause abortion or a congenital syndrome involving seizures and intellectual disability. While very few infected individuals are known to experience the physiological symptoms associated with a Toxoplasma infection, some studies have found the parasite can alter the psychological behavior of mice and possibly,

Okogen Initiates Phase 2 Clinical Trial (RUBY) of OKG-0301 in Patients with Acute Adenoviral Conjunctivitis - PR Web

Image
SAN DIEGO and MELBOURNE, Australia (PRWEB) January 31, 2019 Okogen, a clinical-stage, specialty biotechnology company focused on developing ophthalmic therapeutics, today announced the initiation of a Phase 2 clinical trial (RUBY) that is designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of OKG-0301 in the treatment of acute adenoviral conjunctivitis. OKG-0301 is a topical ophthalmic formulation of ranpirnase, a targeted ribonuclease (RNase) with established broad-spectrum antiviral properties. RNases, naturally present in tears, have evolved as host defense tools and OKG-0301 functions through multiple mechanisms to halt viral replication and reduce inflammation. Adenoviral conjunctivitis, a highly contagious disease, is the number one cause of eye infections globally. There are approximately 16 million cases of acute adenoviral conjunctivitis annually worldwide, with 4 million cases in the United States alone. Approximately 70% of U.S. adenoviral conjunctivitis patients seek treatm

10 subtle signs of a vitamin A deficiency - INSIDER

Vitamin A is an essential vitamin that helps promote good vision, sustain a strong immune system, support the body's ability reproduce, and ensure skin health. If you're not getting enough vitamin A, you might notice changes in your eyesight, especially in dim lighting. A vitamin A deficiency might also lead to a weakened immune system . Vitamin A deficiencies are rare in developed countries. Vitamin A helps promote good vision, a strong immune system, and skin health. Most people can get all the vitamin A they need by eating foods like meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, carrots, and cantaloupes. Though vitamin A deficiency is rare in developed countries — the Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that less than 1% of the American population is deficient — some people are at risk of being deficient in this crucial vitamin. People who are very young, pregnant, breast-feeding, or suffering from a liver or malabsorption condition are

Cats and Asthma: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments - Healthline

Image
Your cat may be one of your best friends. But cats can also be a major source of asthma triggers, such as dead skin (dander), urine, or saliva. Breathing in any of these allergens can trigger allergic reactions that result in asthma symptoms. And your cat doesn’t even need to be around to trigger a reaction. These allergens often float around in your home’s air — latched onto dust particles — and land on furniture, curtains, and rugs. If your cat shares a bed with you, allergens can stay in your sheets and blankets for years to come, even if you wash them regularly. Giving up your beloved feline friend not an option? You’re not alone — many would rather take precautions to treat their symptoms and the source of the allergens than put their kitty up for adoption. That’s exactly what we’ll cover here: How you can start a treatment plan and make lifestyle changes to accommodate allergic asthma caused by your cat. First of all, it’s worth knowing how allergic asthma is different fr

Oddball and (Mostly) Outstanding Beer Collaborations :: Drink :: Lists :: craft beer :: Paste - Paste Magazine

Brewery collaborations have been going on for decades—and if the recent team-up of Aslin Brewing and Two Roads on the stellar Under the Wire American IPA is any indication, this is a decidedly good thing, liable to continue as long as the craft beer scene exists. That landscape has also led to a legion of unexpected collaborations that sometimes seem kind of interesting, like Dogfish Head ’s musician-inspired brews. Other times, the collaborations can feel like a sloppy PR grab, like when LL Bean partnered with five Maine breweries to make beers in honor of a collection of Fall Batch Bean Boots, that iconic piece of rugged footwear. Chefs have naturally played in this space, but so have hotels, ski resorts, celebrities, and musicians. Here’s a handful of some of the most interesting, both from the recent past and ever-evolving present. Keep feeders clean to reduce spreading disease among backyard birds - Westside Eagle Observer

Image
LITTLE ROCK -- Birdwatchers may notice an increase in the number of finches visiting their feeders this winter, and with that comes the possibility of a certain bacterial infection that can affect the birds' eyes. Karen Rowe, non-game migratory bird program coordinator for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, has noticed an increase in calls from concerned birders who have spotted house finches, purple finches and goldfinches with a crusty infection around their eyes. "The infection is from a disease called mycoplasmal conjunctivitis, or finch conjunctivitis," Rowe said. "It can cause the birds' eyes to swell and have a residue that dries up into a crusty layer over the eye. It can lead to blindness, increased predation rates and eventually death." Although finches are the primary birds associated with this disease, it has been reported in up to 30 other wild bird species in North America. According to Rowe, this winter, Arkansas has experienced a ver

The Latest News on Glaucoma - ThirdAge

Image
Glaucoma Glaucoma is a frightening vision condition that affects the optic nerve, and if the damage continues untreated, it can lead to blindness. But experts say there is reason for hope. “There are new medications and procedures to treat glaucoma,” said Dr. Andrea Zimmerman, a low vision specialist with the Lighthouse Guild in New York. Additionally, promising studies are underway. One of these, Zimmerman said, involves developing an implant that “could be inserted surgically to dispense medication.” This is good news for those who have been diagnosed and those who are at risk. The first step in preventing glaucoma, Zimmerman said, is getting regular eye exams that can guard against it as well as other eye disorders. A comprehensive dilated eye exam can detect glaucoma in its early stages, allowing you to get treatments that can prevent loss of vision. “Early intervention is the key to preventing vision loss,” Zimmerman said. “Regular eye exams should start by age three. U of A scientists first to pinpoint a cause of pigmentary glaucoma - Folio - University of Alberta

Image
An international team of researchers has identified a gene responsible for the onset of pigmentary glaucoma, which may lead to new therapies for the condition. “People who traditionally we wouldn't think of having glaucoma—young males in their 20s and 30s—are at particular risk for this form of the disease and of losing their vision,” said Michael Walter , professor and chair of medical genetics at the University of Alberta. It is the first time a cause of the disease has been identified. Pigmentary glaucoma (PG) occurs when the pigment on the back of the iris gets deposited into the front part of the eye, causing vision loss and eventually blindness if left untreated. It’s estimated that at least 150,000 people in North America are affected by the condition. The study, led by Walter, also involved researchers at Harvard University and Flinders University in Australia. The team, using data from two individual families with a predisposition toward PG, used a technique known as

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Concerns about measles outbreaks are sweeping the Pacific Northwest after dozens of cases have been identified in Washington and Oregon. Almost two weeks ago, Washington State declared a state of emergency in response to the measles outbreak. According to the Oregon Health Authority, some of the cases in Oregon have been linked to the outbreak in Washington. "Unfortunately I have to say that a majority of these cases are from people who chose not to vaccinate and we are seeing the effects of that," said Dr. Fernando Fan, Chief Pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente. The Kern County Public Health Department released a statement, " We are always concerned about measles. Measles is highly infectious. 90% of people who are not immune to measles will become infected if exposed to it. Infected people can spread measles up to four days before they ever start having symptoms. However, vaccination again measles is very effective at preventing illness. Here

Measles outbreak confirmed in New York - WRGB

The New York State Health Department is warning residents of a measles outbreak. Most cases are in the New York City area and lower Hudson valley, and some have also been confirmed in the Rochester area. While there are no cases in our region now, parents are warned to watch for symptoms. CBS 6 spoke with Pamela Altman, a pediatric nurse practitioner with Troy Pediatrics. She says she worked in this area when we had numerous cases in the region in the 80’s. She says that’s before kids started getting two shots, which has helped boost immunity. She says there is a lot of flu going around the region right now, and she says the way to tell the difference between the flu and measles is that with measles you get a rash. She says the rash starts on the face. “Kids can get a really severe conjunctivitis. It’s not your normal little pink eye you see at school. I mean their eyes are totally red, and oozing mucus. their noses are very runny,” said Altman. She says at the first signs of a
