After 14 dead children from outbreaks, lawmakers to ask operators of facilities how it happened - NJ.com

The owners of the Wanaque Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will be called to a state Senate hearing Monday to discuss how and why a viral outbreak inside the pediatric unit has raged for two months, claiming 11 children’s lives and infecting two dozen other patients, according to the committee chairman. Senate Health Committee Chairman Joseph Vitale, D-Middlesex, said he also intends to invite J ohn Kastanis, the CEO of University Hospital, to answer questions about the deaths of three babies who were exposed to a bacterial infection in the Newark hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. 2 more premature babies die in outbreak at University Hospital The outbreaks at Wanaque and University Hospital are unrelated. “This is an investigative hearing to learn about how in some cases, the system failed to protect these children,” Vitale said. “Was it human or systems errors, or both? How did the facilities respond to the outbreak early on and later? And what can be done to improve qua

5 Possible Causes Of Red Eyes - Medical Daily

Image
Have you been noticing less of white and more of red when you examine your eyes in the mirror? While the appearance of bloodshot eyes is often associated with heavy drinking or lack of sleep, here are some of the other possible causes. 1. Pinkeye or conjunctivitis This is a condition where the transparent outer layer of the eye (known as the conjunctiva) becomes inflamed or infected, causing the eyes to appear reddish or pink. In relatively rare cases involving babies, it may be the result of problems with the tear ducts. It is contagious and is usually accompanied by symptoms like itchiness, discharge, and tearing. However, the  Mayo Clinic  notes that the condition rarely has any effect on your vision. 2. Overuse of eye drops If you take eye drops to treat any minor or major eye health issue, ensure they are used properly. Of course, this not only refers to technique but also the frequency of use. Many over-the-counter eye drops contain imidazoline, which works by constricting

Marinomed demonstrates the benefits of its patented Marinosolv® technology - BSI bureau

Image
Clinical trial for Tacrosolv, a tacrolimus-based product candidate against allergic conjunctivitis, planned for 2019 Marinomed Biotech AG (Marinomed) – an established Viennese biopharmaceutical company with a global presence – has published the results of scientific investigations that clearly demonstrate the benefits of its Marinosolv® technology platform. The study, which is available to read now in the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, shows that the solubility of the immunomodulator tacrolimus is 200 times greater in Marinosolv® than in water. This higher solubility could offer significant advantages for producers of tacrolimus-based medicines as well as patients – advantages which Marinomed is already exploiting with the development of Tacrosolv, its product candidate for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis and dry eye syndrome. Marinomed’s Chief Executive Officer Dr. Andreas Grassauer commented: “These are important results in terms of demonstrati

Early primary open angle glaucoma; macula vessel density and thickness | American Journal of Ophthalmology - MD Linx

Advertisement Researchers used a cross-sectional study to determine and compare the ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness and macula vessel density in pre-perimetric and early primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) eyes. They examined a total of 57 healthy eyes, 68 pre-perimetric and 162 early POAG eyes enrolled in the Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study. Findings revealed detectable dropout with regard to both GCC thinning and macula vessel density in pre-perimetric and early POAG eyes. In early perimetric POAG, a greater GCC loss was noted as compared with macula vessel density loss. However, in the detection of early glaucoma, similar efficiency of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) and OCT measurements was observed. Glaucoma affects recognition of gender, facial expression - Healio

Image
Patients with glaucoma, even when visual acuity is still good, require a significantly shorter viewing distance to recognize gender and facial expression as compared with healthy subjects, which may be due to higher sensitivity to crowding, according to a study. When questioned about their difficulties with everyday life, patients with glaucoma often report having difficulties with face recognition, a skill that is critical for social interaction. A group of researchers at two French universities investigated the effect of viewing distance on face recognition skills in 16 patients with glaucoma and 16 age-matched controls. The age range was 48 to 80 years. Faces were centrally displayed on a screen at six sizes, from 0.75 m to 24 m, simulating different viewing distances. Patients were asked to recognize gender and facial expressions, namely happy, angry and neutral. Each of the three facial expressions were presented five times with male faces and five times with female faces, fo

A college student died from an adenovirus infection. But what is an adenovirus and should you worry? - KGUN

Image
BALTIMORE — The recent death of a University of Maryland, College Park student tied to an adenovirus infection has many worried about the potential dangers of such diseases that grow more common in the colder months of winter. But Dr. Eric Almli, the vice chair of the Emergency Department at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, is quick to add perspective about such worries. “The important thing to say is I wouldn’t want there to be a lot of alarm about the adenovirus,” Almli said. “It’s very common. People get it all the time, and typically it’s treated symptomatically.” Those symptoms are familiar to many, particularly during cold and flu season, largely because the adenovirus is a similar pathogen and manifests in similar ways in the body. “Adenovirus is a very common virus this time of year; there are several types of adenoviruses,” Almli said. “It is typically implicated as a cause of the common cold, as well as occasionally some eye irritation as well as some GI symptoms,

New Jersey lawmakers plan hearing on adenovirus outbreak that's killed 11 children - CBS News

Image
New Jersey lawmakers plan to hold a hearing at the state capitol in Trenton on Monday in hopes of learning more about a virus outbreak that's claimed the lives of 11 children. The New Jersey Department of Health confirmed Wednesday that 48 children and one staff member at two facilities in the state have contracted the virus. At the hearing, members of the New Jersey Senate Health Committee will question leadership from the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, the facility where all of the deaths have occurred, on how the adenovirus, a respiratory virus, infected 34 vulnerable pediatric patients, ultimately killing 11 children . Amanda Melillo, a research assistant at the state Senate, described the inquiry as a "fact finding mission" to determine what happened and what the state's responsibility may be in the tragedy.  All of the victims had severely compromised immune systems due to other serious medical conditions and many were considered wards of t

33 Easy Party Makeup Looks to Wear for the Holidays in 2018 - Allure Magazine

Image
Some say it's the after-party that really matters, but for makeup lovers, it's all about the pre-party. The in-between party (aka the actual party) is only half of the fun. Getting ready is an event all its own, and the ones who go all out — like the red carpet-trotting crowd — really go all out, as you can see in their BTS footage . For the rest of us civilians, party season (which we're in, in case you have not been alerted) we finally get the chance to play with the bold and glittery palettes that spend most of their time sitting untouched at the back of your beauty drawer. An evening event is an excuse to go wild with experimental glam (not that you really need one), and if you're the type of person whose usual makeup M.O. is more on the no-makeup makeup spectrum, the holidays provide the perfect opportunity to test sparkly shadow, bold lipstick, or some combination of the two. Just call it friendly competition with the festive decor. Just in case you needed a

If you have to deal with frequent or intense eyelid twitching, consider looking into treatments. Let’s take a look at what causes eye twitching. Although there’s no definitive treatment, there are a few different ways you can remedy this problem.
