Costume contacts are tough on eyes

Image
Think twice before glamming up your Halloween costume with anything wacky on or near your eyes. Eye doctors are on guard around Halloween because trick-or-treaters encounter issues with eyes every year while indulging in spooky fun. So many wind up seeing doctors for Halloween-related problems that the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends thinking twice before adding contact lenses to a costume. "If they don't fit well, or if they're not used appropriately, or if they're not cleaned, the eye itself can undergo some stress that can lead to problems," says Dr. Michelle Andreoli, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and an ophthalmologist at Wheaton Eye Clinic in Illinois. Costume lenses should be prescribed and fitted by a professional, just like regular lenses. These lenses can be especially thick, Andreoli notes: "Not enough oxygen moves through the lens, and without adequate oxygen coming into the eye, the eye loses its oxygen

State sending training teams to centers amid fatal outbreaks

Image
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey health officials said Monday they are sending infection-control teams to four long-term pediatric centers and a hospital to assist with training amid viral and bacterial outbreaks that have left 10 people dead. The teams will assess infection prevention practices and deploy beginning in November, according to Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal. The response comes amid a fatal adenovirus outbreak at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation that left 9 people dead, most under age 18. In addition, a premature baby died following the discovery of a bacterial infection at Newark's University Hospital this month, state health officials have said. "Facility outbreaks are not always preventable, but in response to what we have seen in Wanaque, we are taking aggressive steps to minimize the chance they occur among the most vulnerable patients in New Jersey," Elnahal said in a statement. Those affected at the Wanaque center range i

Latanoprost shows long-term safety in pediatric patients

Image
Latanoprost showed an acceptable safety profile in a cohort of children with glaucoma and elevated IOP. It was generally better tolerated and had fewer side effects as compared with the average adult population. A total of 175 children 5 to 18 years old were enrolled and divided in two groups: 102 were treated with latanoprost or with combined latanoprost and timolol, and 73 received other, nonprostaglandin treatments. No statistically or clinically significant change in BCVA was

Watch Pink and daughter Willow sing together in heartwarming video

When my husband and I were expecting our first child, we also had the lovely experience of trying to sell a car. One potential buyer, a lawyer who was looking to buy a vehicle for his daughter, tried to bargain with us: Would we give him the car in exchange for his legal services in writing a will? After all , he reasoned while gesturing to my belly, you will need one soon. He was right about that—but completely wrong that we needed to sign away a car in order to get a legally enforceable will. As a Motherly editor, I was thrilled to discover recently that through Fabric 's online last will and testament tool, my husband and I are now able to create that will in just about five minutes and for the grand total of $0. (Meanwhile, we sold that car to a paying buyer.) Fabric is a new kind of life insurance company, and because they designed the service with families in mind, they've taken steps to help remove the hang-ups that can cause people to postpone drawing up a will—i
